Tibetan Butter Tea

Tea customs hold an important place in many different countries. Different Tea drinking cultures have developed in different parts of the world based on varying needs, tastes and types of Tea available in those regions.

In Tibet, drinking butter Tea, known as Po cha in Tibet,  is very important as it is highly nutritious while good for digestion, altitudes and with a refreshing effect. Nomads are said to often drink up to 40 cups of butter Tea a day.

This is also served to guests. According to the Tibetan custom, butter Tea should be drunk in separate sips, and after each sip the host refills the bowl, which  is constantly topped up. If the guest does not wish to drink more, the best thing to do is leave the Tea untouched. In this way the host will not be offended.

The Tibetans love to drink butter Tea.  The Tea used is a particularly potent, smoky type of brick Tea from Pemagul, Tibet. The Tea is then mixed with butter, sesame powder, peanut kernels, melon seed kernels, pine nut kernels and salt. They keep stirring the brew with a wooden stick until the Tea, butter and the other seasonings are completely blended.

The final result is a slighly salty, oily and robust flavoured Tea.
